this Omilu on the north side of Kona, near Kawaihae
on February 4, 2006 and weighed it in at 20.12 lbs.
I was with my friend from Oahu and we picked up
some nice game got some niceuhus, couple joes, a Mu,
nice yellowspot, and wantedsomething bigger. So we
decided to head toward the opposite side of our spot.
We were diving at about 45-55 feet when we
encountered some Mus but couldn't get them to come in
close enough. I finally ran into a big Kaku about 30
lbs, dropped on him but he wouldn't give me a shot.
So kept swimming out when finally I came a across a nice
overhang. I looked down and saw a shadow I knew it was
Ulua. So I cautiously observed him habits, then slowly
descended down and rested at about 40 ft.
Waited but he wasn't there, so I continued down
he cave to about 48 feet looked in one area of the cave
and only saw two big taapes. So on the same drop turned
my body completely around and looked on the other side of
the cave and there I saw his silhoutte.
Waited right outside the cave and saw
two nostrils just staring at me, he turned and I cranked him.
He started going crazy and I went up for air. He yanked my
gun but luckily he got stucked outside the hole and my friend
put in a backup shot. Thanks to my friend Peter we then
weighed it in at the Kona harbor, 20.12 lbs. possible new
HSD record.
Thanks

....read more | | | Gene Sep 3, 2004, 5:49 AM My brother called me last night, told me about the latest Hawaii Skin Diver magazine. James said it had a cover story about hunting goatfish. Then he said he was surprised that there was so little coverage of Gene Higa; that it was just mentioned in the “letters” section. I guess there wasn’t enough lead-time to get it into the issue.
I still remember the night James called me. He’d just seen on the evening news that Gene Higa drowned during a contest. James was spooked. For my birthday he’d taken my Riffe and had a reel installed. This after I told him of a day off of Makapuu where I’d seen a school of rainbow runners, a big uku, and several omilus, all within an hour. I told him the water was deep out where I’d seen them.
Now he was worried. He knew how I liked to wander off on my own and do my own thing. I told him not to worry, that I would play it safe. But how could I be safe when someone like Gene Higa died? I mean he was a pro; experienced, a competition veteran, and with an engineering degree, no dummy. If SWB happened to him, how could I protect myself from it?
The fact is I can’t.
I’ve never had SWB. I’m glad, because they say SWB is almost guaranteed death if you’re diving alone. If it’s any consolation, survivors say there is no drama involved; no nausea, disorientation, panic. There’s just an interruption in time. One moment they’re kicking up, neck back, back arched, seeing the wind chop up the surface; and the next, their dive buddies are reviving them. The phenomenon is so sly, in almost every case where the diver survives, they insist they’re okay and want to keep diving.
I’ve pushed dives so that I’ve had to windmill my arms, stroking for the surface. I’ve come up feeling that anxious press in my chest, seeing the swimming spots in my vision, and feeling the tingling in my thighs, like I have to urinate badly. But I have never had SWB.
Sitting warm and dry, thinking about this, of course you say there is no fish worth your life. And none is. No trophy, photo, record, story, legend, or meal is worth your life. Safety first. Of course. No doubt about it.
But is that enough?
We don’t stretch a net over a reef and cleanse it of all life that can’t fit through the holes. We don’t drag or cast lines randomly, hoping for a strike. And we certainly don’t stand at the seafood department and point through the glass at what we want to eat, then pay cash for it like the rest of the people.
We hunt the fish. We pay in different ways. That means we get wet and cold, and deal with the same things they deal with: currents, surge, tides, wind chop, and sketchy visibility. Whatever is happening to them happens to us. Fair is fair. What winds up on our kui are our prey, our fish, our meals, and when consumed, ourselves.
I hope Gene Higa was gunning for something big. Maybe a school of three rainbow runners schooling up on him, keeping their distance, their stripes barely visible through the haze. That would be a sight worthy of one’s last memory.....read more | | | Grouper Gone Wrong May 27, 2004, 7:41 PM Being an avid spearfisherman enthralled by the prospect of a big catch, I am often inclined to simplify the complexity of mother nature’s delicate food chain.
